Specialized long term care for older adults over 65 years of age with complex psychiatric disorders, ongoing physical health care needs and/or behavioural challenges caused by mental illness.
Individuals may require longer term mental health treatment and other supports to increase their ability to manage their symptoms on their own and move into a more open environment.
The average length of stay is six months to 24 months.
Access to these services are generally through a hospital setting or a health care professional.
In some cases a family doctor may be able to refer an individual to some tertiary programs.
